Children’s Classes at IUPUI

Fall 2010


The IUPUI Music Academy offers music classes for children ages 3-6, using the Harmony Road Program. This curriculum is an exciting, comprehensive music program designed to help children discover the world of music through motivating materials and “hands on” activities: hearing, feeling, moving, singing, creating, sharing, reading and playing percussion and keyboard instruments. This early background is most important for success in all future musical endeavors. Parental involvement in class and at home is highly recommended. Students are strongly encouraged to have their own keyboard or have regular access to a keyboard with at least 36 keys.

 

Music in Me (MIM) (3-4 1/2 years)

 

This course is designed for students to learn the basic elements of music. Creativity is stressed through this dynamic readiness program, which emphasizes ear training, solfége singing, movement, pitch, and rhythm awareness. Many keyboard activities are incorporated into each class. This class meets for 15 weeks, 45 minutes a week.

Harmony Road 1 (HR1) (4 1/2-5 years)

 

This class encourages exploration of the language of music through singing, ear training, movement, rhythm, note reading activities, keyboard playing, and creative games. This class meets for 15 weeks, 45 minutes a week.

 

Tuition: $175

Harmony Road 2 (HR2) (5-6 years)

 

This course is designed for older students or for those who have completed Harmony Road 1. There will be more emphasis on keyboard playing, ensemble, and rhythm activities. This class meets for 15 weeks, 45 minutes a week.

What are Harmony Road music classes? 

This keyboard-oriented curriculum is an exciting, comprehensive music program designed to help children discover the world of music through motivating materials and "hands on" activities: hearing, feeling, moving, singing, creating, sharing, reading, and playing percussion and keyboard instruments. This early background is most important for success in all future musical endeavors.

 

Young Academy Musicians (YAM) (7-10 years)

 

In this class, students will acquire basic piano skills, as well as learn to read music and understand basic theory. Students will perform a variety of solo and ensemble music with an emphasis on musicality. Class time is split between our state-of-the-art digital keyboard lab and a computer lab, utilizing educational and instructional software. In addition to class time, each student receives two individual (private) lessons during the 15-week session directly before or after a group class. This class meets for 15 weeks, 60 minutes a week.

What is the Young Academy Musicians class?

This beginning piano class develops basic keyboard skills and general musicianship in a fun and motivational group atmosphere. Class time is split between our digital keyboard lab and computer lab, where students utilize computer software to facilitate learning.

 

 

 Children’s Classes at the Center for Young Children

The IUPUI Music Academy also uses the Harmony Road program at the Center for Young Children (CYC) on the IUPUI campus. Students must be enrolled at the CYC in order to participate. Classes meet once a week.

Tuition: $150 (Book and CD included)

Class Times: Students are grouped according to age and their CYC classroom teacher.

 

Children’s Lessons at St. Richard's School

St. Richard's School and the IUPUI Music Academy have teamed up to provide a special opportunity for your child. For one half hour per week, during Aftercare at St. Richard's, your child can learn to play the piano or sing as well as develop basic music theory and musicianship skills in a high-quality, individualized private lesson.  Or, if you would prefer that your child learn about music in a group atmosphere, we are also offering music classes at St. Richard's.  For more information about these opportunities, please contact the IUPUI Music Academy at (317) 278-4139 or 317-278-2593.


Ensembles
for ages 12 and up

Guitar Ensemble


Hang out with some fellow guitar players! Learn how to play with others, interpret music, sight-read better, and work under a conductor. A wide variety of music will be covered. All ages and levels of ability welcome! Classes will meet for 12 weeks, 55 minutes a week.
 

Tuition: $140

Drumming Ensemble

This ensemble will learn and perform a wide variety of traditional ethnic rhythms. Students will learn the fundamental techniques and strokes for both unison and ensemble playing. Many different instruments are used, from African hand drums to congas. All ages and levels of ability welcome!

Tuition: $140

Piano Ensemble

Tired of always playing solo repertoire? Join the IUPUI piano ensemble to meet and collaborate with other pianists. Students will work together on both duets and larger ensemble pieces. Two years of previous private instruction is required. The final class will be a performance.

Tuition: $140

Class Time: Sat., 1:00 pm

 

String Ensemble
 

This course is for string instrument players including violin, viola, cello, and bass. Students will acquire performance skills and learn about musicianship and string ensemble literature including duet, trio, quartet, and string orchestra repertoire. Students are expected to participate in all rehearsals and concerts. Admission by audition only.

 Adult Classes - Fall 2010

 

Piano 101 for beginning students

 

This beginning piano class introduces students to the joys of piano in a fun, non-threatening environment. Using the academy's keyboard lab facility, featuring digital pianos and computer-assisted instruction, students learn how to read music and acquire the basic piano skills necessary to play the music they want to play! You should have a piano or keyboard at home in order to practice and improve your skills.

 

Tuition: $170 (textbook included)

Guitar Class

 

Learn the basics of guitar playing in an engaging fun group from reading single-line melodies and basic chord progressions to learning favorite songs. This class is designed for beginners of any background or experience to learn the basics of guitar technique. Students must bring their own acoustic guitar to each class session.

Voice Class (age 12 and up)

 

Experience the enjoyment of expressing yourself through music by discovering your singing voice. Beginning with group vocal exercises, students will move to individual or solo singing. Each singer will explore the range, agility, and timbre of his or her voice. Class discussion will include proper tone production, breathing, and posture. Let go of your inhibitions about singing; join us and become better at communicating with your voice!

Private Lessons

Individualized, private instruction through the IUPUI Music Academy offers a one-on-one learning experience designed to meet your specific needs. With individualized instruction, you work with the faculty member whose expertise best matches your aspirations. The academy provides students the advantages of a highly-qualified faculty, interaction with other students and frequent performance opportunities.

Our premise is that every musician has a unique learning process and set of goals. We assist the individual in finding his or her musical voice by offering a comprehensive and customized curriculum. This approach includes the application and synthesis of musical skills and knowledge through technical development, music theory, literature and performance opportunities.

Private instruction is available to students of all ages and abilities; instruction is designed to accommodate varying levels of interest and knowledge. Weekly lessons times are arranged in 30-, 45- or 60-minute time blocks with the instructor at the time of registration. Students enroll for the fall semester (16 weeks). Lessons are $18.00 per half hour, $27.00 for 45 minutes, and $36.00 per hour. A $35 one-time registration fee applies to all new students.
